Hiatus

Oof, looks like I started this project at the worst possible time schedule wise. I'm going to be focusing on other stuff more vigilantly for the next little while, but I'll probably compose some stuff over Christmas. I know all 3 of you who read this will be saddened. See you around Xmas!

Rubber Boat

This is a very short tune that started of as an Oriental-inspired theme, but then quickly morphed into a much more nautical sounding one. I drew influences from Yoshi's Island and more or less every game I've ever played that had some sort of pirate ship/harbour level for this one. I really like the tone of the melody line; I'll probably use that sound a lot more in the coming weeks.

Hope you like!

Frost Cave

This is more or less my take on Vanilla Dome from Super Mario World for the SNES. The drums borrow heavily from the underground themes of the Mario franchise, and the sparkly, glass-like tones in the melody are directly influenced by the Vanilla Dome theme. Where mine differs is in the constant bassline and the fact that a melody is much more clearly defined in mine, as opposed to the twinkling sounds of Vanilla Dome.

This is a very basic theme that combats its repetitiveness with a melody line that is broken up by subtle changes.

Bell Tower

This tune drawn inspiration from a number of sources; it originally started off as a Mega Man reference (specifically Mega Man 2), but I soon incorporated ideas from Castelvania and Pokemon to get a frantic (and at times spooky) theme that portrays a sense of anxiety.

I feel this song gives off moods of worry, tension and frustration, all of which are readily apparent in most vertical climbing platformer levels.

And finally, I wanted to make a theme that had potential to endlessly loop (and I'll be exploring this more and more as I continue this blog).

But enough over-analysis! Listen for yourself!

And So It Begins...

This blog will serve an outlet for me to share original midi-only tracks that I've created that have been inspired directly from the videogames of my childhood. I plan on doing themed song packages eventually, but for now I'll just release whatever I feel like with no real rhyme or reason.

With each song I upload, I'll give you a very brief synopsis of what I wanted to achieve and which games I drew influence from. The songs I write might not always correspond with the game that inspired it, or even seem like it would mesh with the rest of said game's soundtrack, but that's not my intention. I just want to see what I can come up with.

To make it interesting, I've given myself a few arbitrary parameters that must be met:
1) I must upload at least one song per week (Well, the goal is to have 50 done by next year, precise weekly updates probably won't happen)
2) I can only use 4 midi channels per song
3) Probably some other stuff I'll add later on

So without further delay, I present you with my first song in the series: "Cloudsong." This tune is heavily influenced by The Zelda 1 and Final Fantasy main title themes, although it has a cuter melody. It's almost a lullaby of sorts and has two distinct sections.
